Level – Easy

This crochet tote bag is perfect for a first granny square project. Made up from 8 classic granny squares and rounds of sc (UK dc) you’ll be learning how to work in rounds as well as crocheting and joining granny squares.

Three rounds complete these granny squares and if you’re a visual learner and prefer a diagram, there’s one to help you with this free crochet pattern.

Once you’ve crocheted the granny squares you join them to make a ring. The body is then worked by joining at any seam where two granny squares meet.

You’ll need:

I love the jute handles! Placed inside the crocheted fabric and sewn closed, this will stop the handles stretching and make them hardwearing.

5. Sunflower granny square tote bag

13+ Easy Crochet Granny Square Bag Patterns - Jera's Jamboree - crochet, entertainment, self-care (8)

Level – Easy

How fab are these sunflower granny squares! If you need a bit of a lift, give this granny square tote bag pattern a go.

This tote is made up of 13 granny squares sewn together with an easy border and handle. You’ll have it worked up in no time.

Four rounds complete the granny squares.

You’ll need Aran/Worsted weight yarn in cotton and a 4mm crochet hook.

If you’re a beginner crocheter and have worked with basic crochet stitches, the sunflower granny squares will introduce you to:

  • puff stitch
  • bobble stitch

You’ll be building up your stitch knowledge and adding to your skills 🙂

You’ll find photos to guide you in this free crochet pattern for a crochet granny square bag as well as a clear diagram on how to sew your granny squares together to form the tote bag.

6. Daisy Granny Square Tote Bag

13+ Easy Crochet Granny Square Bag Patterns - Jera's Jamboree - crochet, entertainment, self-care (9)

At first glance you might think the daisy granny square is the same as the sunflower granny square. It’s not though. The difference is in the stitches …

No puff or bobble stitches, this granny square uses a cluster of 4 tr (US dc).

The yarn weight is the same but the fibre is acrylic.

Both are hardwearing and for an accessory such as a tote bag, the only difference between cotton and acrylic is that acrylic will be stretchy but cotton will hold its shape (which will make a difference in the handles too).

It’s also worked in a 5mm crochet hook so the gauge will be different.

The photos are lovely and clear which will help you work your granny squares and join them together to make your tote bag.

The daisy granny square tote bag pattern is also available to purchase on Etsy.

These classic granny squares are worked in chunky yarn making the three rounds for each granny square really quick to work up.

You’ll need a 6mm crochet hook.

Four crochet granny squares complete the front of the tote bag. The back is worked as one granny square in 9 rounds.

Final bag measurements– 28cm X 29cm

This is a free PDF download from Lovecrafts.

8. Granny Square Tote Bag

13+ Easy Crochet Granny Square Bag Patterns - Jera's Jamboree - crochet, entertainment, self-care (12)

Level – Easy

I’m loving the addition of the side panels that give this tote bag an extra dimension.

The tutorial is split into two parts – the making and joining of the granny squares in part one and part two shows you how to make the lining and attach the handles.

You’ll need:

  • Worsted/Aran yarn
  • 3.5mm crochet hook
  • 1/2 a meter or yard of fabric for lining
  • 1 and 1/2 meters or yards of strapping for the handles (about 1″ or 2.5cm wide)
  • stitch markers

This is an easy project to do but the instructions are quite involved so you will have to concentrate.

Watch the video tutorial to crochet a total of 27 granny squares (worked up in 3 rounds) and how to join them.

9. Granny Square Sock Bag

13+ Easy Crochet Granny Square Bag Patterns - Jera's Jamboree - crochet, entertainment, self-care (13)

Level – Easy

I love that Joanita has left the yarn choice (and corresponding crochet hook) up to the maker.

If you use DK cotton yarn and a 4mm hook, the sock bag measures approx 12 inches (31 cm) in width and 15 inches (38 cm) in length.

Plenty of room to store socks and any other items you want to keep tidy.

You’ll find colour spectrum inspired colour palettes to help you choose your colours for this project.

The front panel of the sock bag is made up of 9 classic crochet granny squares of 3 rounds with an optional 4th round.

The back panel is made up from one piece worked in half treble (US half double) back loops without turning the work. You fasten off at the end of each row and start the next row from right to left (this technique is also used in mosaic crochet).

I think the top trim border and ribbon finishes this crochet project beautifully.

10. Fat Bottom Granny Squares Bag

13+ Easy Crochet Granny Square Bag Patterns - Jera's Jamboree - crochet, entertainment, self-care (14)

Level – Easy

Fat bottom bags are constructed from one large rectangle and you’ll be working 20 granny squares (four rounds each square) to make this bag.

Once your squares are crocheted you’ll be joining them with the mattress stitch.

To keep the bag from stretching, this free granny square crochet bag pattern also shows you how to make a lining from a fat quarter. A skill you can then use on other projects 🙂

The photos are clear and will guide you every step of the way to construct your bag.

Wooden handles give this bag a classy finish.

The fat bottom granny squares bag crochet pattern is also available to purchase on Etsy.

11. Caldwell Granny Market Bag

13+ Easy Crochet Granny Square Bag Patterns - Jera's Jamboree - crochet, entertainment, self-care (15)

Level – Intermediate (crochet is easy but a lot of instructions to follow)

Stitches that may be new to you for the granny squares:

  • puff stitches
  • open tr (US dc) v stitches

There are photos for the four rounds, brilliant if you’re a visual learner.

The crochet granny squares measure 5.5cm x 5.5cm and you’ll be crocheting 13 squares in total.

The market bag overall, approx 15” wide and 13” tall.

You’ll need:

  • Worsted/Aran cotton yarn
  • 5mm crochet hook
  • cotton rope (optional for the handles)

The diagram for how to join the squares is straightforward and the photo clear for where you need to join your yarn for the border.

I love how easy it is to add the rope to the top of the granny tote bag.

This market bag tote crochet pattern is also available to purchase on Etsy.

12. Granny stitch tote bag

13+ Easy Crochet Granny Square Bag Patterns - Jera's Jamboree - crochet, entertainment, self-care (16)

Level – Easy

I love making granny stitch blankets – it’s very soothing and calming, working in the round and the repetition of the stitches.

Transferring the technique to make this granny stitch tote bag is easy. Even if you haven’t worked with the granny stitch before, you’ll find it easy.

The body of the tote bag is worked in rounds of 25. The handles are crocheted with an inner and outer row of dc (US sc) with a granny stitch in the middle.

Take the skill you learned from the fat bottom crochet bag and add a lining.

Use your scrap yarn, choose stripes or crochet in one colour. Lots of options!

13. Crochet Granny Square Tape Yarn Bag

13+ Easy Crochet Granny Square Bag Patterns - Jera's Jamboree - crochet, entertainment, self-care (17)

Level – Easy

This is a fun and super quick pattern worked in tape yarn.

If you can’t find the tape yarn recommended in the pattern, you could substitute the yarn with:

  • Wool and the Gang – Tina Tape
  • Phildar – Phil Eucalyptus
  • Stacy Charles Fine Yarns– Ariana
  • Rico Design – Bändchen
  • Trendsetter Yarns – Allure
  • Lang Yarns– Lino
  • Hamanaka- Eco Andaria
  • Wool and the Gang – New Wave Yarn

Or you could substitute with super bulky yarn!

You’ll need a 9mm hook. The pattern has a wooden button and brass clasp to close the bag (optional).

This granny stitch bag measures: Panel: 13’’/33 cm square Strap: 37’’/94 cm

The bag is worked by making 2 square panels and adding a strap. The super bulky weight of yarn means you’ll only be working 8 rounds for the panel.

You can also purchase this crochet pattern on Etsy.

14. Boho Fringe Granny Square Crochet Purse

13+ Easy Crochet Granny Square Bag Patterns - Jera's Jamboree - crochet, entertainment, self-care (18)

Level – Easy

You’ll work 2 x granny squares in rounds until they measures 9” x 9” and then dc (US sc) around the sides and bottom to seam the bag. The handles are braided and added to the crochet granny square bag with clasps.

This free crochet pattern uses Aran/Worsted yarn in wool and a 4mm crochet hook (smaller size than recommended with the weight of yarn – you would usually use a 5mm – 6mm hook with this yarn).

Easy instructions are included for adding a muslin lining which will make your bag hardwearing.

Adapting this pattern to make the bag bigger is easy, just continue the rounds until the granny squares are the size you want.

With the addition of a top flap and fringe, this is a classy granny square tote bag that would look great in any colour.

This pattern is available to purchase on Etsy.

15. Granny Square Market Bag

13+ Easy Crochet Granny Square Bag Patterns - Jera's Jamboree - crochet, entertainment, self-care (19)

Level – Easy

This bag is a market bag crochet pattern featuring traditional granny squares.

You’ll work 18 granny squares in 6 different colours.

Each square measures: 11.5 x 11.5 cm / 4.5 x 4.5 inches.

There are photos of the colour combination in this free crochet pattern – you can substitute the colours but still use these for a guide.

After seaming the granny squares together using whip stitch, you’ll crochet the top. These rounds include the handles.

No sewing handles on should make this market bag sturdier. Watch out for stretching of the handles though (once you have items in the bag). Using the yarn recommended in the pattern will help.

16. My Favorite Tote Bag

13+ Easy Crochet Granny Square Bag Patterns - Jera's Jamboree - crochet, entertainment, self-care (20)

Level – Intermediate (crocheting is easy but there are a lot of instructions to follow)

This crochet granny square bag pattern is designer Carolyn’s favourite tote bag. It’s easy to see why!

Worked from the bottom up, this tote bag is worked in rounds and rows with an opening left to sew in the granny square.

I love the flower granny square in the centre. There is the option to add surface crochet to the flower which really makes it pop!

If you haven’t worked surface crochet before, instructions and photos will help you. Definitely give it a go.

17. Granny Square Crochet Zip Bag

This video tutorial will show you how to crochet this versatile zipper pouch.

You will crochet 6 granny squares of 3 rounds each, add a lining and a zip closure.

It’s such a fab size meaning there are so many things you can use this bag for; make-up, chargers, crochet hooks are but a few.

You could substitute the classic granny square with your favourite design and make it truly unique!

18. Granny Square Pouch

13+ Easy Crochet Granny Square Bag Patterns - Jera's Jamboree - crochet, entertainment, self-care (21)

How gorgeous are these drawstring pouches!

The flower motif is the centre of the granny square and all you need to do is crochet extra rows of granny stitch for the top of the pouch and add a border. The drawstring threads through the granny stitch. Adding a bead gives the pouch a professional finish.

The video tutorial has English subtitles so you’ll be able to follow along with no problems.

I think these would sell well at in person craft events!
