Ingredients for DIY Toilet Bombs

Fizzy toilet bombs are made with just four low-cost, simple ingredients. You’ll need baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, citric acid and some pure essential oils.

Baking soda– Baking soda is a natural mineral that is a mainstay in most kitchens, but it has superpowers in the world of cleaning too, due to it’s ability to neutralize odors and dissolve hard water stains.

Hydrogen peroxide– Hydrogen peroxide is a naturally produced liquid known for its bleaching and disinfectant properties. You can use the samehydrogen peroxide you keep on hand for first aid.

Citric acid– Citric acid is a naturally occurring acid that works as a disinfectant and cleanser. It’s also the ingredient that creates the all important fizz! You can buy citric acid in bulk at many co-ops or natural food stores or findcitric acid on Amazon.

Essential oils– The pure, natural essences distilled directly from plants are known as essential oils. Not only do they provide a lovely, all-natural fragrance, the majority of essential oils have antibacterial properties, making them perfect for household cleaning. Some of the more popular essential oils for cleaning include lavender oil, eucalyptus, lemon, orange, grapefruit, pin and tea tree oil – but you can feel free to use your favorite essential oils.

Toilet Bomb FAQs

How long do toilet cleaner bombs last?

As long as they are kept in a sealed container, they should stay fresh for at least a couple months. After that, the essential oil fragrance will probably fade, although the fizzing reaction will probably still occur.

My toilet cleaning bombs got puffy after putting them in the molds. What should I do?

Oh my – the mixture probably either had too much liquid or it was a humid environment that added more moisture. I recommend trying again with less liquid – or try using a spray bottle to add the liquid instead of mixing it in directly. Meanwhile, save the “ruined” mixture and use for scrubbing the sink or bathtub – the ingredients are still great for cleaning!

What essential oils work best for toilet fizzies?

Any essential oil that has antibacterial properties will be great for this DIY recipe.A study in PubMedshowed that the essential oils that were most effective against bacteria include lemongrass, eucalyptus, peppermint and orange oils

Can I use the same baking soda I use for cooking?

Yes, there’s no need to purchase a “special” type of baking soda – it’s all the same! Good old Arm & Hammer will do the job just fine!

Homemade Fizzy Toilet Bomb Recipe

Fizzy toilet bombs are natural way to keep your toilet fresh and deodorized in between cleanings.

Keyword: cleaning, DIY, green cleaning, non-toxic, toilet cleaner

Ingredients

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • cup citric acid
  • 1 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide
  • 30 drops essential oil eucalyptus, peppermint, lemon or lavender

Instructions

  • Mix baking soda and citric acid together in a bowl. Slowly drizzle in hydrogen peroxide, mixing as you go. Slowly add the essential oil, mixing constantly. The mixture will bubble and fizz a little bit but that is OK. Another option is to put the wet ingredients into a spray bottle and slowly spray the liquid onto the dry ingredients, while mixing.

  • Press the mixture into silicone molds. Make sure the mixture is packed into the molds tightly. Let the molds dry for at least 6 hours or overnight.

  • Push bath bombs out of the molds. Store in a sealed container. Keep away from young children who may think they are edible.

  • Toss 1 or 2 toilet fizzies into the toilet bowl after flushing. Let them dissolve on their own – there’s no need to flush again until the next time the toilet is used.

Notes

After some feedback from users, I have included a range for the amount of liquid in this recipe – both for the hydrogen peroxide and for the essential oils. If you have a humid environment in your home, you may need to stick with the lower amount of liquid. In dry environments, the higher amount of of liquid will be best.
